I was surprised to learn this from a reliable source but yes, 904L does scratch easier than 316L. It seems that Rolex motivation for choosing 904L is its higher resistance to acidity. Over several decades, the acidity of the skins natural oil does slowly bite the metal, so Rolex probably decided that it was better to re-polish the case from time to time.

Re: Scratch on Brand New Rolex Sub. The Rolex steel (904L) is, for all practical purposes, as durable and scratch-resistant as any other steel commonly used in watches (316L). It is not coated or heat- or surface treated after all and will pick up scratches over time. Personally I would leave the watch as it is and have it polished by Rolex in, a572 gr 50 steel angle
Standard SS watches use a 316L stainless steel, Rolex uses 904L, that's much harder to work with but the results are fantastic. Unless the material added is of the same grade (which to date I believe only Rolex uses this kind of steel), don't do it and risk ruining the metal.

They knew that abandoning 316L meant abandoning all the equipment that they had used for their previous watches. 904L is a very particular type of steel, and it isnt easy to work with.
904L steel is more expensive and much more complicated to machine because of its hardness. Rolex had to replace most of their steel production line and tools to be able to handle the change. It helps that they make all their parts in-house, most other brands have to get cases made by outside suppliers.
Toughening Up. Its possible to use a form of stainless steel called 904L, which is both harder and even more resistant to corrosion than 316L, in a luxury watch. Rolex does. But as Manousos, points out, those advantages also make 904L more difficult to machine, and therefore more expensive to produce.
The small marginal benefits it brings - corrosion resistance, and to some degree scratch resistance, and even the way it shines (all up for debate on how much a practical difference there is over 316L) is likely not worth the extra costs involved for manufacturers who don't have the resources Rolex does.
