309 is an austenitic heat resistant alloy with oxidation resistance to 1900F under constant temperature conditions. When frequent thermal cycling is involved, the alloy is resistant to about 1850F. Re: Welding steel on stainless with 309 rods If you use 308 rod to weld mild steel to stainless steel, the weld itself will be subjuct to rusting due to the mild steel mixing with the weld metal. If you use 309, to weld dissimilar metals, the weld itself will not rust due to the extra alloys in the 309 filler rod.
